Early Corvairs 1960 through September 12, 1962 engines use a shorter blower bearing hub (1.5″) with a black plastic cap. On September 13, 1962 (engine date stamp T0913 and later) the bearing and hub were changed to a 2″ tall model and the black plastic cap eliminated. This second bearing hub continued through the end of 1964 production.
Here are some numbers:
6255864 – 1.5″ tall Bearing Hub (1960-9/12/62)
6257938 – Hub Bearing Cap (1960-9/12/62)
907292 – Bearing and Shaft Assembly (1960-9/12/62) (was originally 907175 for 1960-61)
3826474 – 2″ tall Bearing Hub (9/13/62-1964)
907448 – Bearing and Shaft Assembly (9/13/62-1964)
It should be noted that the 1960-1963 Assembly Manuals show the Hub Bearing Cap, but it is clearly indicated in P&A Manuals that the cap was only used on the short bearing hub which was only used on “1963/ALL FIRST JOBS”, so it’s safe to say that only the earliest 1963s used the cap. We know the exact date of the bearing changeover from TSB DR #563.
